Burroughs lands on Bronson’s crew
IMPERIAL, Pa. — Four days after his departure from Koehler Motorsports and driver Ricky Thornton Jr. was announced, veteran crew chief Anthony Burroughs has landed with Kyle Bronson’s Brunswick, Ga., team, starting his latest head-wrench role in Saturday’s 38th annual Pittsburgher at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway.
The 52-year-old Muscle Shoals, Ala., native joins his third team over the last season and a half, following last season’s stint with Brandon Overton and the Longhorn Factory Team before reuniting with Thornton in an attempt to rekindle their ultra-successful pairing that produced 56 victories from August 2021-July 2024, including 34 in 2023 alone.
Amid a seven-victory campaign and fourth-place standing in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series points — a year Burroughs admitted had made them “a little disappointed” — he had every intention of finishing the season, saying “you never want to start something and not finish it.”
But the 36-year-old Bronson’s program, owned by his uncle and aunt, Wayne and Shirlene Hammond, simply “fits me,” Burroughs said.
“I’m really excited about the opportunity here,” Burroughs said. “We’re going to finish the year, but we’re going to back up and rebuild. We know Kyle Bronson can drive a race car. Kyle has always had to kind of be his own crew chief. He’s had to run a team, and now he’s going to be able to concentrate on being a race car driver, and I’m going to take all that off of him.”
The pairing gives Bronson the first true, experienced crew chief of his career.
“Really, it’s always just been me and a couple buddies. We just kind of winged it,” Bronson said. “So Burroughs is a huge asset. … Me and Burroughs have been friends for a lot of years, and he’s always kind of helped me out a little bit and given me some information and kept me going.”
Burroughs’s extensive crew-chiefing résumé includes Jared Landers (2012), Earl Pearson Jr. (2013 and July 2020-August 2021), Steve Francis (2015), Darrell Lanigan (2016), Don O’Neal (2017-18), Josh Richards (2019), Brian Shirley (January 2020-July 2020) and Hudson O’Neal (July 2024-December 2024). His 2015-19 seasons were spent with Clint Bowyer Racing, with his ’19 stint alongside Richards marking the last time he worked with Rocket Chassis, which Bronson’s team campaigns.
As for his departure from Koehler Motorsports, Burroughs said “there are no hard feelings.”
“I wish those guys all the best, and I know he does the same to me, too,” Burroughs said. “Me and Ricky have become really good friends, and we’ll remain friends for the rest of our lives.”
