Former Fairbury co-promoter dies at 80
Former Fairbury (Ill.) Speedway co-promoter Paul Augsburger, a longtime Fairbury Fair board member instrumental in the track’s success, died Tuesday morning at his Fairbury home. He was 80.
In recent years, the U.S. Army veteran remained an integral part of pre-race ceremonies for the annual Prairie Dirt Classic at the track formerly known as the Fairbury American Legion Speedway.
"His loyalty and dedication to the Fairbury American Legion Speedway, VFW and our community was unmatched," the track wrote on its Facebook page. "We will miss your smile, strength and friendship!"
Among the Highland, Ill., native’s survivors are significant other, Jan Kester, son Paul, daughter Peggy and stepsons Jeff Curl and Matt Curl, the track's current co-owner and promoter. A celebration of life is 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Chatsworth American Legion with military honors at 3 p.m. A private family burial at a later date will be at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Ill.
