Saying it's time to end a chapter for the track-owning Caltagarone family, 62-year-old Hummingbird Speedway in Reynoldsville, Pa., will close for good at the conclusion of the season.

The track, built on a tract of land beneath a hill frequently visited by hummingbirds, was built by the late Louis Caltagarone (pictured) in 1964 and operated through 1975 and again from 2000-26 with Super Late Models regularly part of the program.

“For Louie, and for the entire Caltagarone family, Hummingbird Speedway has always been about much more than a racetrack,” said a statement on the track’s Facebook page thanking competitors, fans and employees. “It has been a huge part of our family, our lives, and our memories. We are incredibly proud of what Louie built in 1964 and of everything Hummingbird Speedway has meant to so many people over the years.”

The track’s closure announcement comes less than a year following the passing of Louis Caltagarone at age 97 last October. It also comes amid a challenging season with 10 rainouts and just four completed events with the track planning two more events including Saturday’s final points races.

The finale event will come with Sept. 19’s Dave Srock Memorial, an event paying a minimum $4,000-to-win for Super Late Models. The track also plans an Oct. 3 swap meeting and a season-ending picnic Oct. 4.

"Thank you for believing in Hummingbird Speedway,” the track statement concluded. “Thank you for supporting Louie’s dream. Thank you for supporting our family. And most of all, thank you for being part of our lives.”
