Sprint car standout Aaron Reutzel of Clute, Texas, will make his Dirt Late Model debut aboard one of Gordy Gundaker’s cars during Dec. 3-5’s Gateway Dirt Nationals at The Dome at America’s Center in St. Louis, Mo., Gundaker announced on his podcast, The Dirt Parlor, earlier this week.

Reutzel won’t head into his Late Model debut without some preparation, telling DirtonDirt that “the plan right now is to do two tests” ahead of the December event.

Gundaker, the St. Charles, Mo., driver who has qualified for seven of the nine Gateway Dirt Nationals features, says that “it’s going to be so much fun” to have the Interstate Batteries High Limit Racing points leader as a teammate at the indoor spectacle.

“I've always kind of wanted to drive a Late Model, but, you know, just being so different, it's like, I don't know if I really want to or not,” the 36-year-old Reutzel said on Gundaker’s podcast. “And then the Dome came along, and it's like, to me, the Dome is kind of like the Chili Bowl. You do get a lot of people that don't belong, but I feel like if there's a place I'm gonna run a Late Model, it's probably there where I could probably screw up and run into someone, but it's like, ‘Hey, it's the Dome, bud.’ ”

The two-time All Star Circuit of Champions title winner has 13 victories this season driving for Iowa-based Ridge & Sons Racing, second-most in winged 410 sprint car racing.

“There's no better place to go do it,” Reutzel said of making his Dirt Late Model debut. “And, yeah, (Gordy’s) stuff is really fast there, too. So I think just the whole going there and having good people to hang out with, and a trailer to go to and have some drinks … I'm super, super excited.”
