Crate tour ends driver's suspension
Greg Martin’s two-year suspension from the Best Plumber 604 Racing Series has ended with the series accepting the Olive Springs, Tenn., driver’s appeal of penalties levied after the tour’s May 9 event at I-75 Raceway in Sweetwater, Tenn.
Instead of a suspension, Martin (pictured) is on series probation through May 9, 2027, the Crate Late Model tour announced Tuesday evening. He’s eligible to compete again on the series starting with Aug. 29’s event at Volunteer Speedway in Bulls Gap, Tenn.
The series, which announced on Aug. 11 it would consider Martin’s appeal, said officials changed Martin’s penalty because of “no prior incidents, positive character references, completion of an anger-management course and the satisfactory resolution of the legal matter involving the incident with the state of Tennessee and all parties involved.”
The second-year series said if Martin is levied with any unsportsmanlike conduct penalties during his probation, on or off the track, he’ll be permanently banned from the series.
Martin’s penalty was issues after he drove through the I-75 Speedway infield after an on-track incident and bumped into the left-rear corner of Matt Henderson’s car. Video of the incident showed the contact sent two of Henderson’s crew members who were working on the right side of the car hurtling backward several feet with at least one requiring medical attention, according to Henderson.
In announced the original suspension May 10, a series statement said “driver and crew safety is of the utmost importance” to the series and “all participants are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that protects the safety of competitors, crews, officials, fans and partner tracks.”
