Elder Pierce recovering from surgery

joshjamesartwork.com

Bob Pierce, the Hall of Fame Dirt Late Model driver, chassis builder and crew chief for his son Bobby, underwent successful surgery today at an Omaha, Neb., hospital, the team announced.

In an evening Facebook update of the 74-year-old’s condition, the younger Pierce said he had a morning “health scare” that required immediate attention.

“He’s really doing good now, so just wanted to give everyone an update,” the younger Pierce posted on his Facebook, adding that he’ll undergo more tests and evaluation.

The elder Pierce was stricken while the team was parked at Shelby County Speedway in Harlan, Iowa, where he'd traveled to assist his son during this weekend’s Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series-sanctioned Silver Dollar Nationals. Bob was with his son Tuesday night for Bobby’s $15,000 Lucas Oil Series victory at Adams County Speedway in Corning, Iowa.

Retired from driving since 2003, Bob Pierce has built Dirt Late Models and open-wheel modifieds at his Bob Pierce Race Cars business for more than two decades. He’s also overseen his 29-year-old son’s rise to the top of the Dirt Late Model world, missing only a handful of Bobby’s races from his start as a teenager.

The younger Pierce thanks those who’d reached out with concern but asked for peace and privacy.

“Please keep sending prayers to help Bob heal up quicker,” he wrote.

Pierce said he plans to skip Thursday’s Silver Dollar Nationals opener but compete Friday and Saturday at Shelby County's $52,000-to-win event.
