Texas Crate tour reverses DQ ruling

The American Crate Late Model Series on Monday night reinstated Chase Holland of Success, Miss., as Saturday’s series winner at Kennedale (Texas) Speedway Park.

The Texas-based tour’s reversal came 48 hours after Holland’s disqualification for violating the series rule of crew members joining him in the infield for a victory lane celebration. In announcing Holland’s reinstatement, series owner Donnie Shipp — also a competitor in the series and the race runner-up who was declared the winner upon Holland’s DQ — acknowledged series officials “failed to properly communicate our series rule regarding infield access.”

Shipp’s statement added that “mistakes were made by all parties involved,” blaming Holland’s crew for not following series rules (which call for victory lane ceremonies following the complete race program) and the track, which “did not communicate to the series director that fans would be permitted to enter the infield following the race.”

Shipp said the tour fully accepts “responsibility for the communication breakdown and will take steps to ensure this issue is addressed moving forward.”

The tour’s restriction of infield celebrations is for the safety of teams, Shipp wrote, citing multiple incidents of individuals being struck by race cars. The series owner also bristled at accusations the outcome was “rigged” to give him a victory, saying he’d assisted Holland’s racing efforts during the weekend, delivering tires to him and selling him race fuel.

"I love this sport and have always tried to do my part to help it grow and remain strong,” Shipp said. “We are all human, and mistakes will happen from time to time. What truly matters is how we respond to those mistakes and work together to make things right.”

Chavus Holland, Holland’s father, who removed a previous post protesting the disqualification, said he appreciated the resolution. “Thank you to the Shipp family and everyone involved for making this right!” he wrote. “I pray that all the negativity will be removed and that this series will see unbelievable success in the future!”

The track, which made an initial statement denying any role in Holland’s penalty, posted a statement thanking the series “for making this bad situation right for Chase Holland.”
