Big purse boost for Carter Memorial
Thunder Mountain Speedway near Corbin, Ky., has increased the winning purse for Saturday's second annual Rod Carter Jr. Memorial to $5,121, a $3,000 boost for Ultimate Pro Late Model Series competitors.
The event honors the longtime Woodbine, Ky., dirt racer and multitime track champion at Lake Cumberland Speedway in Burnside, Ky., who died June 13, 2024, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. The 2024 inductee into the South Central Kentucky Dirt Racing Hall of Fame was 54.
Originally set to pay $2,121-to-win, the event will now offer a $5,121 winner's prize, with the No. 21 honoring Carter, who began his racing career at the age of 18 and continued to race into his 50s, scoring a runner-up finish in Crate Late Model action last season at Thunder Mountain Speedway in Corbin, Ky.
The event features Bourbon Bandits prerace and intermission concerts, along with the track's mascot, Thunder, greeting young fans in the grandstands throughout the night.
Joining the Ultimate 604 Crate Late Model Series are modifieds, hobby stocks and two divisions of front-wheel drives; Gates open at 2 p.m. with a drivers' meeting at 6 and hot laps to follow.
