Swims family pauses racing at Dixie
Racing at history Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, Ga., and its sister track Rome Speedway will go on hiatus in 2022 with the Swims family focusing on the health of Martha Swims, who along with her husband Mickey and other family members has owned the legendary racetrack for 46 years.
Martha Swims was recently diagnosed with cancer, prompting the family to "place a pause" on the 2022 season at the tracks, according to Facebook post on the Dixie Speedway page.
"We have always done everything as a family, including racing," the track said. "And now, we are blessed to come together and rally around Martha as she continues the fight."
Purchased by the Swims in 1976, Dixie Speedway has long been among dirt racing's most legendary tracks, a cradle to Hall of Fame racers and a host to major Dirt Late Model events as well as the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series since its inception. The family has also owned and operated the nearby Rome oval since 1969.
With Mickey and Martha attending every race they've promoted for more than 50 seasons — with the exception of late in the 2021 season — Mickey decided "his place is to be home with her" instead of at the races, the Facebook post said.
The track thanked fans for well wishes and support with Mickey asking everyone to "keep on praying" for Martha and the family. Send cards to 150 Dixie Drive, Woodstock GA 30189.
