stlracingphotos.com

Charleston (Ill.) Speedway owner Jim Campbell, the 2017 DIRTcar Promoter of the Year, died Sunday at the Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center in Mattoon, Ill. The Mattoon resident was 74.

Campbell, the retired superintendent of Mattoon’s Howell Asphalt, also owned and operated Campbell Asphalt Trucking. The former racer began operations of the racetrack in 2014 and stepped away after the 2018 season because of health issues. A post on the track’s Facebook page called Campbell “the kindest and hardest-working man I have ever known.”

Survivors include his wife Shirley, two sons and two daughters along with many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Visitation is 3-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 29 at Swengel-O’Dell Funeral Home in Neoga, Ill.; the funeral is 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 30, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Neoga Memorial Cemetery.
