Gilpin hospitalized after rollover crash

Life-flighted to an Indianapolis hospital after a multiple-rollover wreck Saturday evening at Brownstown (Ind.) Speedway, Late Model track points leader Devin Gilpin of Columbus, Ind., is awaiting Sunday afternoon results of a second CT scan after positive reports during overnight testing and observation, according to his sister.

No internal bleeding has been detected for the 26-year-old Gilpin, whose hemophiliac condition, along sky-high blood pressure, prompted the decision to fly him to St. Vincent Hospital, Ashley Gilpin told DirtonDirt.com. She reported late Sunday morning that her brother was sore but sleeping comfortably despite a broken collarbone while awaiting more test results.

Gilpin’s Late Model rolled several times over the turn-one banking about 10 p.m. during the final laps of the MARS East Series event won by Tanner English. Gilpin’s car ended up on its wheels and he climbed out quickly with emergency responders initially finding him responsive and alert.

Concern grew when he returned to his team’s trailer. Lying down, Gilpin felt like he was going to pass out and began sweating and feeling dizzy, his sister reported. He also complained of a severe headache along with neck and back pain. With his blood pressure spiking, Paramedics advised the flight to Indianapolis.

An initial CT scan at St. Vincent about 1:30 a.m. Sunday revealed no internal bleeding, a relief for Gilpin, whose hemophilia means cuts or severe bruising can cause uncontrollable bleeding.

Gilpin rose to fame in the modified division, winning three UMP DIRTcar championships before moving into the Late Model division in recent seasons. He won last season’s Schaeffer Oil Southern Nationals Late Model title and has more than 250 feature victories in 16 seasons of racing overall.
