McCool ends 3-year MSCCS skid at Whynot

March 25, 2012, 8:19 am
From series reports

WHYNOT, Miss. (March 24) – Bub McCool of Vicksburg, Miss., survived a caution-filled feature at Whynot Motorsports Park Saturday night to score his first Mississippi State Championship Challenge Series victory since 2008. He led flag-to-flag in the 50-lapper.

The second-starting McCool earned $2,500 in topping defending series champion Klint Byars of Carrollton, Miss., and Jeremy Broadus of Biloxi, Miss., in the 50-lap race. Brian Rickman of Columbus, Miss., finished fourth and moved into the MSCCS points lead while Cliff Williams of Star, Miss., advanced through the field to finish fifth after using a provisional to make the feature lineup.

Jason Cliburn started on the pole but McCool led the first lap with Wing and Ronny Lee Hollingsworth in pursuit. Cliburn's race was over by the seventh lap, and Brooks Strength fell out of the fourth spot when he got into the backstretch wall.

McCool stayed in control midway through the race with Hollingsworth, Rickman, Byars and Wing in pursuit, but Hollingsworth was next to be knocked out by the backstretch wall. McCool kept Rickman and then Byars at bay while the eighth-starting Broadus rallied his way into the top five, taking third on lap 48.

Notes: McCool’s Victory Circle Race Car is powered by a Jay Dickens Racing Engine with sponsorship from McCool Logging, Henderson Motorsports, Southern Belle and Laird Lumber. ... The victory is McCool’s seventh on the MSCCS tour. His most recent series win came on Oct. 10, 2008 at Columbus (Miss.) Speedway. ...
