Davey Johnson grabs ULMS win at Sharon

April 21, 2013, 5:07 am
From contributor and series reports

HARTFORD, Ohio (April 20) — Davey Johnson of Latrobe, Pa., shot past pole-starting Jim Rasey of Southington, Ohio, on the fourth lap at Sharon Speedway, then fought off a hard-charging Mike Knight of Ripley, N.Y., for a 30-lap victory Saturday on NDRL's ULMS Racing Series.

Johnson, whose sixth career series victory was his first special event win since 2011, earned $3,000 on a cold night at the half-mile oval.

Knight, who made a charge on the high side while most competitors ran the low groove, settled for his second consecutive runner-up finish while Russ King of Bristolville, Ohio, was third. Max Blair of Centerville, Pa., driving the backup car of reigning series champion Boom Briggs, was fourth while Dave Hess Jr. of Waterford, Pa., rounded out the top five.

Rasey spun on lap 25 while running fourth and finished 17th in the 23-car field.

Notes: Johnson’s Rocket Chassis is sponsored by Imperial Towing. ... His previous ULMS victory came Aug. 20, 2001, at Pittsburgh's Pennsylvania Motor Speedway. ... Johnson’s quick qualifying time of 14.994 seconds lowered the 7-year-old track record set by Robbie Scott of Shinnston, W.Va., in August 2006. ... Rob Blair, who won the April 6 series opener at Mercer (Pa.) Raceway Park, scratched from the Sharon feature because of a broken driveshaft. ... ULMS returns to Sharon three more times this season; the next visit is June 12. ... ULMS drivers return to action April 27 at McKean County Raceway in East Smethport, Pa., a track — like the series — now under the control of NDRL founder John Kennedy and his staff.
