What won the race: Fourth-starting Tim Ward, originally of Mesa, Ariz., but now hailing out of Harcourt, Iowa, powered around the top-three starters on the opening lap and held off Cole Searing on a two-lap shootout to win Friday's Repairable Vehicles.com Tri-State Late Model Series debut at Hancock County Speedway. Ward, a two-time modified Boone Supernationals champ, beat Searing by 0.638 of a second for the $3,000 paycheck and his first career Late Model victory.
Quotable: "It feels great (to win). This class is so tough, we’ve learned so much here. Man, it’s just crazy tough," Ward said. "It’s huge to finally get (a win) out of the way. We kinda got one last year, but we kinda had a goof up there. Hopefully we can keep it going, looking forward to tomorrow."
Key notes: Ward initially faced pressure from polesitter Dylan Schmer before a lap-five caution then fought off Cole Searing on a green-white-checkered finish after his near five-second lead was erased by a lap-29 stoppage. ... The third-starting Searing slipped to fourth on the opening lap, then passed Greseth for third on lap 13 before overtaking Schmer for second on lap 19; Searing initially trailed Ward by nearly three seconds only to see Ward’s advantage grow by two additional seconds over the next 10 circuits, before the late-race caution. ... Greseth and Schmer finished third and fourth after Justin Zeitner slipped off the track in turn three on the final lap, dropping him to 11th in the final rundown. ... The race was slowed three times, none bigger than a first lap melee that involved Curt Kranz, Trevor Anderson, Corey Bosma and Chris Palsrok; the mess necessitated a 10-minute red flag for cleanup after Kranz spun entering turn one, eliminating Palsrok, with the others piling in. Anderson continued to finish eighth. ... The lap-five caution came after Blair Nothdurft and Cody Thompson made contact while battling for sixth, sending Thompson on a half-spin across the infield; the stoppage was pinned on Nothdurft, who was forced to tag the field, but rallied to finish 10th. ... The lap-29 yellow flew just as Ward was set to take the white flag when Dalton Magers spun from 12th in turn two and stopped in the infield; he finished 13th as the final starter to complete 30 laps. ... The near 30-minute feature was billed as the first Late Model race at Hancock County since 2008. ... Gary Brown Jr. scratched after hot laps.
On the move: Trevor Anderson of Watertown, S.D., started 24th and finished eighth.
