Charlie McKenna takes the checkers for his first victory in two years.
What won the race: Second-starting Charlie McKenna of Ames, Iowa, led 30 laps largely unchallenged in winning Saturday's Ray Houck Memorial at Adams County Speedway. McKenna beat apparent runner-up Jake Neal to the checkers by 0.647 of a second for the $5,000 payday co-sanctioned between the Malvern Bank East and West tours and his first feature win of the season.
Quotable: “We went to Wisconsin last weekend and absolutely had our butts handed to us and that is a sobering, silent, long drive home once that happens,” McKenna said. “It’s just a lesson, you gotta go to work, we gotta tear this thing completely apart. (My crew) have just put in a ton of work and so it’s nice to actually get it done for them after losing (May 24) at Dubuque.”
Key notes: McKenna notched his first win since May 30, 2024, at Hamilton County Speedway. ... It was his first touring series victory since a Malvern Bank win on Aug. 11, 2023, at Thayer County Speedway in Deshler, Neb. ... McKenna now has four career Malvern East Series wins and three on the West Series. ... Apparent runner-up Jake Neal was disqualified in postrace technical inspection. ... Fourth-starting Tad Pospisil inherited second after taking the checkers more than 1.5 seconds behind McKenna. ... Polesitter Kyle Berck, winner of the previous night's Malvern West stop at Boone County Speedway in Albion, Neb., was third. ... Andrew Kosiski climbed seven spots and finished fourth. ... The race was slowed by four cautions, the first on lap seven when Corey Zeitner and J.C. Wyman tangled as they battled for 10th, sending Zeitner spinning in turn four; Zeitner retired 10 laps later while Wyman slammed the frontstretch wall while running seventh just after taking the white flag. ... The second stoppage came on lap 12 when Chris Spieker left the turn-three racing surface and retired. ... High-running Troy Morris III, who ran as high as third on lap 11, slowed abruptly to draw the third yellow flag on the 24th lap. ... Fast qualifier Jason Hahne was running sixth when he pulled off under green on lap 18. ... The 30-lap feature lasted 28 minutes with 14 starters completing the distance. ... Adams County is scheduled to host the Malvern Bank-sponsored sister tours again on Aug. 1 for another $5,000-to-win program.
On the move: Dylan Sillman of Alvo, Neb., started 16th and finished fifth.
