Chad Simpson celebrates his first Malvern East victory of the season.
What won the race: Ripping around Jesse Sobbing on the 15th lap, sixth-starting Chad Simpson of Mount Vernon, Iowa, led the final 11 laps of Monday's 25-lap Memorial Day special in the Malvern Bank East Series debut at Mountain Dew Bloomfield Speedway. Simpson beat the pole-starting Sobbing to the line by 6.655 seconds for his first series victory of the season and ninth of his career, tying Tad Pospisil for second on the tour's all-time list.
Quotable: “We weren’t really where we needed to be in that heat race and we’ve just been struggling with this car. It’s a new car this year and we just gotta keep racing,” Simpson said. “We had some graduation parties the last couple nights and we’re not point racing this year, so we’re just out having fun. But, this is the best race car that I’ve been in, in a long time.”
Key notes: Simpson snared his first Malvern East Series win since last Sept. 20 on the undercard of the Knoxville (Iowa) Late Model Nationals. ... It's his fourth overall victory of the season, all of them coming in the last 16 days in his home state (the other three on the Karl Chevrolet Premier Late Model Tour). ... Bloomfield hosted its biggest Late Model event in 19 years to the day, a USRA event won by Chris Simpson over older brother Chad. ... Simpson collected a total of $5,750, including the $2,750 Skyline Materials bonus for starting sixth. ... Second-starting Blair Nothdurft led eight laps before Jesse Sobbing powered around him to lead laps 9-14; Simpson used a similar move around Sobbing at the exit of turn two to take control on the 15th lap and never looked back. ... The runner-up Sobbing held off a charging Dylan Thornton by 0.204 of a second with Nothdurft fourth. ... Jason Hahne slipped by Jacob Hobscheidt on the 16th lap to round out the top five ... The green-to-checkered feature lasted eight minutes with 10 starters completing 25 laps and 15 running at the finish. ... Jake Neal, scheduled to start 15th, scratched after heat action.
On the move: Dylan Thornton of Orcutt, Calif., started eighth and finished third.
