Jacob Hobscheidt (01) passes Charlie McKenna (22) for the lead.
What won the race: Tiptoeing around the extreme bottom of Dubuque Speedway and taking control from race-long leader Charlie McKenna on the 26th lap, seventh-starting Jacob Hobscheidt of Plattsmouth, Neb., paced the final five circuits in winning Sunday's 30-lap Malvern Bank East feature for his first career series victory. Hobscheidt beat Nick Marolf by 1.489 seconds for the $3,000 payday and his first career Late Model triumph.
Quotable: “I just stayed patient (running the bottom). I knew it’d probably come in, the top would just widen out, just kinda like how it did last year,” Hobscheidt said. “I just looked back in the notebook, I mean, I had a good run here too last year, just kinda ran out of laps. I don’t know, I’m just so happy — we’ve been working so hard on this thing and finally got one.”
Key notes: Second-starting Charlie McKenna led the opening 25 laps and remained committed to Dubuque's high side. Meanwhile, seventh-starting Jacob Hobscheidt worked the track's extreme low line and started making ground with about 10 laps to go — Hobscheidt advanced from seventh-to-first in eight laps (19-26), ultimately taking control from McKenna and never looking back. ... Ninth-starting Nick Marolf followed Hobscheidt on the bottom and climbed from seventh-to-second between laps 23-29, ultimately finishing about 1.5 seconds behind the race winner. ... Jason Hahne, who trailed McKenna for the opening 24 laps, followed suit in slipping by him on the bottom, taking third on the final lap and relegating McKenna to fourth. ... Blair Nothdurft, winner of Saturday's Malvern East season opener at nearby Maquoketa (Iowa) Speedway started and finished fifth. ... Tad Pospisil climbed four spots to finish eighth. ... The lone caution came when polesitter Andrew Kosiski was called for jumping the race's initial start; Kosiski was a non-factor in fading to finish ninth. ... The 30-lapper lasted eight minutes with 16 starters completing the distance.
On the move: Runner up Nick Marolf of Moscow, Iowa, started ninth.
