What won the race: Rusty Schlenk of McClure, Ohio, scored a dominant flag-to-flag victory Saturday at Montpelier Speedway, leading all 40 laps for his second career Ultimate Heart of America Series triumph. Schlenk took the checkers 2.305 seconds ahead of Steve Peeden for the $5,000 payday, his second Ultimate HofA victory at Montpelier and fourth overall at the track going back to last year.
Key notes: Schlenk's other Ultimate Heart of America Series win came last year at Montpelier, worth $5,000. ... He also added a $5,000 payday there last June before topping April 11's Northern Allstars Late Model Series stop, worth $7,500. ... Schlenk, who lapped up to fifth place, enjoyed a 6.135-second lead over Steve Peeden on lap 22 only to see Peeden reduce his advantage to a little more than 2 seconds at the checkers. ... Peeden took second from Jerry Bowersock on the third lap with Blake Creech overtaking Bowersock for fourth on lap 10. ... Bowersock traded fifth with Carter Schlenk, the race winner's teenage son, several times before the younger Schlenk took the spot for good on the 30th lap, then slipped by Creech for fourth with four laps to go; Creech settled for fifth with Bowersock in sixth. ... The 13-minute race was slowed twice in the first two laps — first when the initial start was called back, then for debris — before the final 38 laps were completed without further incident. ... Brad Rickels pulled off under green at the halfway mark as the race's only retiree.
On the move: Dona Marcoullier of Houghton Lake, Mich., started sixth and finished third.
