Bobby Pierce heads for a $6,000 victory at Florence Speedway.
What won the race: Regaining the lead on the 14th lap after an early lead-swapping duel, Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., topped Devin Moran in Friday's opening 25-lap semifeature at Florence Speedway at the Sunoco North-South 100. Pierce, last year's 100-lap winner, picked up a $6,000 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory in taking the checkers 1.709 seconds ahead of Moran, who led laps 1-5 and 8-13.
Quotable: "That was a fun race with (Moran). We've had a lot of fun races lately, back at the Silver Dollar (at Huset's Speedway in Brandon, S.D.) we raced it out good," Pierce said. "Awesome race car yet again. We had a bad-fast race car."
Key notes: Pierce notched his third Lucas Oil Series victory of the season and 27th overall. ... The lone caution appeared on the 13th lap for seventh-running Kyle Bronson's barrel-rolling wreck in turn four. The brand new car, brought to Florence directly from the Longhorn Chassis shop, rolled twice but Bronson wasn't injured. "That one kind of rattled my cage a little bit," adding that his framerail apparently dug into the sizable cushion. ... Preliminary points from Thursday and Friday set the lineup for Saturday’s heat race lineups preceding consolations and the $75,000-to-win finale. … The purse increases to an event-record $325,000 over three days, including an event-high $3,500-to-start payoff in the finale.
On the move: Tanner English of Benton, Ky., started 10th and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Pierce’s Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Low Voltage Solutions, Rio Grande Waste Services, Hoker Trucking, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Oakwood Tire Center, Churchill Transport, Collins Brothers Towing, K1, Carnaghi Towing & Repair, Toyota of Danville, Floyd’s Waste Systems, PureMax Racing Oil, A Plus Vacuum, Leka Tree Service, Bert Transmissions by Budda, Ted Brown’s Quality Paint & Body Shop, VP Race Fuels, Swift Springs, Bilstein Shocks, Dirt Car Lift and Performance Bodies.
