What won the race: Joseph Joiner of Milton, Fla., led all 30 laps from the pole to win Friday's $3,000 opener of the eighth annual Bash at the Beach at Southern Raceway. He survived a late-race scrape while lapping Joe Denby to capture his ninth career Coltman Farms Racing Southern All Star Series feature victory, with six coming at his hometown track.
Quotable: "I seen Jesse (Enterkin), he showed me we had a straightaway (lead) and it was closing up there," Joiner said. "We rode behind (Denby) for five laps and he was chopping his (corner) entry and chopping his exit and leaving the middle open. I know something in the right-front ain’t right (after the contact with Denby) ... I didn’t have the feel I had when we took back off after that caution, so we gotta go through that and it probably cost us a couple thousand dollars in front end parts racing a lapped car, so whatever.”
Key notes: Joiner, who will seek his third straight Bash at the Beach triumph in Saturday's $5,000-to-win finale, made contact while lapping Joe Denby on lap 20, sending Denby spinning and collecting second-running Tyler Clem, the Florida driver who was behind the wheel of a Big Frog Motorsports-prepared Viper Motorsports entry. ... Joiner credited assistance he received from VG Performance engineer Vinny Guliani for getting his program on track. ... Second-starting Dalton Cook reclaimed the runner-up spot on the lap-21 restart and trailed Joiner for the final 10 circuits. ... Billy Franklin started and finished third. ... J.R. Moseley and Bo Slay each improved two positions, finishing fourth and fifth. ... Series points leader David McCoy gained two spots and finished seventh. ... Friday's feature lasted 22 minutes, with nine drivers completing the distance. ... Dakota Fox scratched from the main event lineup.
On the move: J.R. Moseley of Columbus, Ga., started sixth and finished fourth.
