What won the race: Overcoming the loss of power steering, polesitter Wil Herrington of Cochran, Ga., soared to a Crate Racin’ USA Series victory Saturday at Mountain View Raceway. He finished 1.078 seconds ahead of Ahnna Parkhurst to earn $3,000 in setting fast time and leading all 50 laps in his debut at the track.
Quotable: “The car was perfect tonight, as we set a new track record in qualifying, then we took the lead at the start of the race, and then the power steering went out on lap 10 while we were in lapped traffic,” Herrington said. “Now I’m not a big guy, but I somehow got a rhythm going, but boy I was tired at the end of the race.”
Key notes: Ninth-starting Cruz Skinner finished third. ... The car of Jody Knowles flamed up on lap 19 and a red flag appeared to extinguish the tire; he wasn't hurt. ... Thirteen drivers completed 50 laps. ... The series made its first visit to Mountain View for a 50-lapper. … The track has reopened after being closed for several seasons with significant upgrades.
On the move: Jimmy Elliott of Cleveland, Tenn., started 12th and finished fifth.
Winner's sponsors: Herrington drives a CVR Race Car with sponsorship from Last Air and Electrical, Herrington Automotive, Montgomery Logging, Joey Reynolds Trucking and Dowdy Construction.
Points chase: Entering the event, Cody Overton of Grovetown, Ga., led the series point standings.
