BROWNSTOWN, Ind. (Sept. 24) — Saturday’s 37th annual Jackson 100 at Brownstown Speedway was one for the record books, as Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., captured an unprecedented sixth career victory in the 1/4-mile oval’s longest running event.

Winning the evening’s fourth heat race to line up outside of the second row, Bloomquist worked around the bottom of the racetrack, shooting ahead of polesitter Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ind., on lap two of 100. The Hall of Famer led the remaining distance to earn a $20,000 payday in his 14th Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory of the season.

“We took it kind of easy qualifying,” Bloomquist said in victory lane. “I didn’t want to jump the cushion and get ourselves a bad start. But the car was great in the heat race. It took off good. It was nice. We were really prepared for the weekend. We didn’t have a bunch of rushing around or thrashing to do. Everything went pretty smooth."

While it was Bloomquist who dominated the 100-lapper, seventh-starting Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., wasn’t going down without a fight. The 2012 Jackson 100 winner challenged Bloomquist through the race’s early stages, with the top two cars distancing themselves from the field at the halfway mark.

Fighting back Owens’s challenges to pull away late-race, it was Bloomquist finishing first at the checkers, notching his 76th career Lucas Oil Series victory. But the Tennessee driver was quick to admit that Brownstown is a racetrack that’s taken him time to master.

“This actually was probably the most challenging racetrack when I first started racing and traveling around,” Bloomquist said. “We came here for the first time and didn’t make the show. We were used to winning shows down south. We came back again and we got 10th. And then the next time fifth. And then second. And then we won all three of the big shows in one year. It’s always been a pretty special place to us."

Owens held on to post a runner-up finish, with outside polesitter Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., running third. Eighth starting Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., was fourth while 12th-starting Chris Simpson of Oxford, Iowa, rounded out the top five.

“We had a good hot rod tonight,” Owens said. “I really felt like at one time there we were going to be able to roll them on the high side. I got to sliding my car a little bit too much getting in the corner, and whenever it did it just kind of overheated my left-rear, and he was able to pull us a little bit. So I just kind of relaxed, took it easy, and he gained about six, seven, eight cars on us there and was able to maintain that. We had a good car. I feel like if I hadn’t scooted my tire, those few times, we would have been right there on him a little closer at the end.”

Notching his first podium finish in Lucas Oil Series action since his Magnolia Motor Speedway victory back in June, Lanigan was pleased with Saturday’s performance.

“The car was pretty good tonight,” Lanigan said. “We’ve been working extremely hard on this new piece trying to get it better and it definitely showed tonight. We’re getting closer."

Notes: Bloomquist notched his 76th career Lucas Oil Series victory; his most recent Jackson 100 triumph came in 2014. … The race was slowed by four cautions. ... The first yellow flag waved on lap five for debris on the racetrack. … Greg Johnson slipped over the turn-three berm to draw a caution on lap 20. … A yellow flag flew on lap 27 when Chad Stapleton slowed on the frontstretch; he was running fifth. …Brandon Sheppard stops on the backstretch to draw a caution on lap 39.

Pre-race setup

The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series moves to the historic Brownstown (Ind.) Speedway this weekend for the 37th annual Jackson 100. With March’s Indiana Icebreaker rained out, the $20,000-to-win event marks the tour’s first stop at the 1/4-mile oval on the 2016 season.

Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., enters Brownstown as the defending race winner, while series points leader Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., has five career Jackson 100 victories. Among other weekend favorites is former Brownstown track champion Don O’Neal of Martinsville, Ind., who’s resume boasts four Jackson 100 victories.

Friday’s program will include Super Late Model qualifying, as well as a full show for Crate Late Models. Super Late Model heat races, consolations and the 100-lap feature are slated for Saturday.
