Rain nixes I-75's Winter Championships

Originally scheduled for Jan. 27 before getting tentatively postponed to Feb. 10, officials at I-75 Raceway have cancelled the inaugural Winter Championships at the Niota, Tenn., oval because of another unfavorable, rainy weather forecast.

With no suitable reschedule date, track staff and the Ray Cook Promotions team have cancelled the $5,053-to-win Super Late Model special, but have already begun talks to schedule the inaugural event again next year.

“It is unfortunate that Mother Nature didn’t play nice with us,” Ray Cook said in a release posted to social media on Wednesday.

“We had snow on the ground on the original date and then the forecast for this coming weekend just never got any better. It’s a shame because there was a lot of interest in the event from drivers and fans, but it will have to wait until 2025 now. There just isn’t a reschedule date in the near future that won’t conflict with another race in the area.”

Cook and his promotions team will now shift its focus on the Schaeffer’s Oil Spring Nationals which kicks off its season on Thursday, Feb. 29 at Waycross (Ga.) Motor Speedway. The Southern-based spring miniseries returns to Sweetwater, Tenn.‘s I-75 Raceway on Friday, March 29, with $10,053 being awarded to the winner.
