BUDDS CREEK, Md. (April 27) — Grabbing the biggest victory of his Super Late Model career, second-year division racer Trever Feathers of Winchester, Va., led virtually all the way Saturday at Potomac Speedway’s Ernie Jones Memorial for a $3,222 payday. | Slideshow

Feathers, a third-generation driver, took the checkers for the first time in a Three State Flyers-sanctioned event ahead of polesitter Kenny Pettyjohn of Millsboro, Del., while David Williams of Charlotte Hall, Md., was third. Mark Pettyjohn, the runner-up’s brother, was fourth and Jamie Lathroum of Mechanicsville, Md., who won Friday’s series event at Winchester, rounded out the top five.

“This is the first time I’ve ever raced here in a late model,” said the 21-year-old Feathers after his caution-free, 35-lap victory. “I can’t believe I’m standing here right now. We’ve been working on this car all season trying to get it right, and I can’t thank my mom and dad and all the people who help with this thing, this win is for them.”

Kenny Pettyjohn and Feathers shared the front row with Pettyjohn winning the race into turn one, but Feathers used the outside groove to snare the race lead as the mob roared off turn two.

From that point on, it would be a race for second, as Feathers sliced in and out of lapped traffic to lead the distance. Feathers had to deal with heavy lapped traffic in the latter stages of the race.

“I lost my brakes around lap 26,” the winner said. “I really had to take it easy over those final few laps because I wasn’t sure how big of a lead we had and I didn’t want to give this one away in lapped cars, but the track was just about perfect tonight and it was my job to get it done, and we did.”

Notes: Feathers drivers a Barry Wright Race Car powered by a Devenny’s Racing Engine and sponsored by McFarland Custom Painting, North River Farms, USA Produce, Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic, Jimmy Moran and Rapid Chassis by Roy Anderson. ... The winner’s earnings included $200 from T.W. Bentley Heavy Truck Service. ... The race honors the late brother of track owner Rick Jones. ... The race lasted just 13 minutes and all 23 starters were running at the finish. ... Mark Pettyjohn picked up a $200 bonus from Three Mules Welding Supply for his fast time. ... Next up for the Three State Flyers is a three-race Memorial Day weekend at Hagerstown, Winchester and Hesston May 24-26.
