Allen Brannon gets a hug after winning the race honoring his uncle.
What won the race: Hometown driver Allen Brannon led flag-to-flag for an emotional victory in Saturday’s inaugural 37-lap Chuck Brannon Memorial at Winchester Speedway. Running a race honoring his late uncle, the 53-year-old veteran turned back challenges from Kyle Hardy before beating Tyler Horst to a whopping $10,175, including the $3,700 base money, lap money and a heat-win bonus.
Quotable: “That one red flag, he was sitting up there with me,” Brannon said of his late uncle. “We had a conversation. He was riding with me. I just miss Chuck to death. He was with me here every Saturday night. When he couldn’t get around very good, he was in the stands with my wife sitting.”
Key notes: Brannon's family connection to Chuck Brannon, the driver of the No. 37 who died last year, produced a touching scene in victory lane. He fought back tears as he engaged in several long, meaningful hugs with family members; he called his victory "probably the best one ever." ... Brannon noted that early-evening rain, which delayed the program, created a fast, physical racing surface that left him drained by the feature's conclusion. ... Hardy tested Brannon several times before jumping the cushion following a lap-35 restart and dropping back to finish fourth. ... Horst seized second with Hardy's slip backward and finished in the bridesmaid spot, just ahead of fast-timer Dale Hollidge. ... Brannon also faced an early challenge from Alex Ferree, whose bid was spoiled by a battery issue. ... Ross Robinson also was an early retiree while battling up front. ... Nine drivers were running at the finish. ... Along with the $3,700-to-win first-place prize, $370 payoffs went to the fast qualifier, heat winners and hard charger. ... The approximately $5,000 in lap money was collected through sponsor contributions. ... Track curfew prevented the Crate Late Model and Pure Stock features from being contested.
On the move: Waynesboro, Pa.'s Horst advanced from the 20th starting spot to finish second.
Winner's sponsors: Brannon's self-owned Longhorn No. 30 carries backing from Brannon's Construction, Swift Springs, FHM Racing Engines and Penske Racing Shocks.
Points chase: Entering the weekend, Kyle Lee of Mercersburg, Pa., led Winchester's weekly Super Late Model standings.
