Carrier grabs $10,000 victory at Portsmouth

July 7, 2008, 9:32 am
From series reports

PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (July 5) — Fourth-starting Eddie Carrier Jr. of Salt Rock, W.Va., overtook polesitter Jeremy Miller of Gettysburg, Pa., on the 13th lap and led the remainder of the Pepsi 75 at Portsmouth Raceway Park for his second career Mid-Atlantic Championship Series victory. Carrier earned $10,000 in keeping MACS champion Jason Covert of York Haven, Pa., at bay in the second half of the race. Fast qualifier Donnie Moran of Dresden, Ohio, finished third followed by 12th-starting Doug Horton of Bruceton Mills, W.Va., and Eric Wells of Hazard, Ky.

Miller led fellow front-row starter Josh McGuire of Grayson, Ky., and Carrier in the early going, but Carrier made an outside move on McGuire before a lap-eight caution to grab second. Carrier kept rolling on the outside to take command on lap 13, and Miller's race ending when he dropped out on lap 17. A McGuire-Josh Richards tangle on the backstretch sent Richards spinning and out of contention, while McGuire had a flat tire later on to fall out of his second spot. Covert nosed in on Carrier's car a few times near the race's midpoint but never pulled alongside a race that ran caution-free after lap 27.

Notes: Carrier's Rocket Chassis has a Carl Grover engine and sponsorship from Engines Inc. ... Carrier's previous MACS victory came Sept. 25, 2004, at K-C Raceway near Chillicothe, Ohio. ... The race was slowed by eight cautions, including the lap-27 tangle between McGuire and Richards (in the Ernie Davis-owned No. 25) that also collected Steve Francis (in the Tim Logan-owned No. 11), Matt Miller and Jason Montgomery. ... There was a brief red flag on lap 27 as fog rolled in and officials allowed crews to put tear-offs on driver helmets to help improve their vision. ... Richards rebounded on Sunday to win the MACS race at PRP that was postponed Friday by rain.
