WINCHESTER, Va. (April 26) — Starting outside the front row, Jamie Lathroum of Mechanicsville, Md., led all 35 laps Friday at Winchester Speedway for his fifth career victory on the Three State Flyers circuit.

“You make your own luck in these races.” Lathroum said after pocketing $3,000. “I know the fans probably don’t like time trials too much, but as a racer, if you time good you get to start up front in the heat races and with the good cars that are usually at these races it means an awful lot.” | Slideshow

Lathroum’s only scare in the race came after halfway as he encountered heavy lapped traffic at the 3/8-mile oval, which saw its fourth winner in four Super Late Model races this season.

“Those lapped cars were pretty hairy out there tonight,” Lathroum said. “I know I had to do a slide job on a few to get by, because you never know how close the guy running second is until it’s to late. I just want to thank Huey with MBH and all the people on this team for giving me such a good car tonight.”

Reigning track champion Kenny Pettyjohn of Millsboro, Del., and Lathroum paced the field to the initial green flag with Lathroum darting into the race lead as the pack raced off turn two.

Pettyjohn hounded Lathroum for the first 20 laps before Jason Covert of York Haven, Pa., secured the spot on lap 21. A caution flag on the 22nd circuit bunched Covert and the rest of the field on Lathroum’s back bumper. But Lathroum was up to the challenges and took the checkered flag by three lengths over Covert. Fast qualifier Gregg Satterlee of Rochester Mills, Pa., was third followed by Pettyjohn and D.J. Myers of Greencastle, Pa.
