Late flats help Williams nab $4,000 at Potomac

BUDDS CREEK, Md. (Aug. 12) — Two victories in single night? Not a bad way to spend a Friday for David Williams of Charlotte Hall, Md., who earned a total of $4,000 at Potomac Speedway.

“This is the kind of night a race car driver can only dream about," said Williams, the reigning Super Late Model champion at the 3/8-mile oval.

Williams collected his fourth and fifth victories of the season at Potomac, winning a 25-lap makeup from a July 3 rainout, then grabbing a 35-lap victory in the night's regularly scheduled event aboard his Pete Cameron and Roland Mann-owned No. 72 Rocket Chassis. He has 30 career victories at Potomac.

In the opening feature, Williams made the most of his front-row starting spot as he blasted into the lead and cruised all 25 laps. Runner-up D.J. Myers of Greencastle, Pa., chased Williams the entire distance, but settled for second in the first $2,000-to-win event. Kenny Moreland was third followed by Dale Hollidge and Roland Mann, co-owner of the winning car.

The second feature wasn't quite as easy for Williams. Hollidge took off from his pole starting spot and appeared headed to his first Potomac win of the season, still in control with just five laps remaining.

But a flat right-rear tire ended Hollidge's chances and handed the lead to Moreland — who was also looking for his first Potomac victory. But on the restart, Moreland also had a flat right-rear. Suddenly the sixth-starting Williams was out in front.

Williams held off Jamie Lathroum of Mechanicsville, Md., and then Keith Jackson of Odenton, Md., for another $2,000 victory.

“That was a wild finish. I’d rather be lucky than good any night.” Williams said. “We had a third-place car in this feature, and it’s a bad deal for Kenny and Dale because they were the ones to beat, but I can't thank Pete and Roland and all the people who help on this car enough. This has been a dream season.”

Jackson ended up second with 12th-starting Darryl Hill of Great Mills, Md., in third. Lathroum ended up fourth and Jeff Pilkerton rounded out the top five.
