What won the race: Chris Ferguson of Mount Holly, N.C., was flawless in the 40-lap feature, vaulting off the pole position to capture his third Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series victory of 2014.
Quotable: "It was just a great night," Ferguson said. "The car was fast all night. I can't say enough about those guys at Longhorn. They have helped me out a ton. This is just our second race on it and we set fast time and win."
Key notes: Ferguson's fast-time honor transferred him directly to the 40-lap feature, which he started from the pole position. ... Dennis Franklin, who took the green flag from the outside pole, was knocked from contention when he hit the turn-one wall on lap 37 to bring out a caution flag. ... G.R. Smith, a native of New Jersey now living in North Carolina, flipped wildly over the turn-two wall during hot laps. A tweet from Carolina Clash P.R. reported that Smith was talking to the safety crew at the scene and was loaded into an ambulance to be transported for observation; the track announcer late reported that Smith was released after being found to have bruised ribs and a concussion. ... Smith's car was left outside the track amid the trees so the show could continue without further delay. Wrecker crews spent time attempting to retrieve during the driver intros prior to the feature. ... The Carolina Clash's lone visit of 2014 to Wythe served as the fifth round of the tour's championship chase. ... Wythe is a stalwart of the series, having hosted 24 events since 2001.
Winner's sponsors: Ferguson's family-owned Longhorn Chassis machine is powered by a Clements Race Engine and carries sponsorship Great America Beershine, Keith's Handyman Services, Langley Collision Centers, Big A Custom Graphics and CV Products.
Points chase: With a solid second-place finish, Kennie Compton Jr. of Bland, Va., protected his Carolina Clash points lead at a track located barely a 15-minute drive from his home.
