Ronnie Johnson exults in victory lane after his $3,000 triumph at Dixie.
What won the race: Rallying in the second half of the race, Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, Tenn., took the lead from Landon Bagby on lap 29 and pulled away to earn a $3,000 victory in Saturday's 50-lap Chevrolet Performance Super Late Model Series feature at Dixie Speedway. The veteran standout beat Joseph Brown to the finish line by 1.651 seconds to register his second win in as many starts this season on the tour featuring CT 525-powered machines.
Quotable: “We showed this car is fast because we set fast time, but we also showed this car races even better,” Johnson said. “The car got better as the race went on, and it was really fast in the second half of the race when we needed it. It was good to see Rodney Martin back racing again and he had a strong run. We’ll never know if I could have raced him for the win late in the race because he didn’t finish.”
Key notes: Eight of the 18 starters finished on the lead lap. … After leading the first lap, Johnson fell back to third by lap four. … Johnson moved back to second on lap 26 after race leader Rodney Martin of Cartersville, Ga., dropped out after hitting the third turn wall. ... Johnson kicked off the Chevy tour's '18 campaign with an April 13 triumph at Boyd's Speedway in Ringgold, Ga. He leads the circuit's all-time win list with seven victories. ...
