From track reports

PORT COLBORNE, Ontario (May 19) — Recovering from an early-race spin, Rick Miller of Fulton, N.Y., rallied from deep in the field Sunday at Humberstone Speedway to capture the season opener on the Go Nuclear Late Model Series. Miller’s victory in the Crate Late Model touring event paid $1,000.

Fellow Fulton driver A.J. Kingsley finished second followed by reigning series champion Dale Caswell of Central Square, N.Y. Charlie Sandercock and Sean Beardsley rounded out the top five.

Kingsley and Paul Grigsby started on the front row with Kingsley out front early over Ed Carley, Grigsby and Caswell with the frontrunners hitting traffic before Shayne Tenace drew a caution.

With Kingsley still out front, Caswell took second on the restart while Grigsby began to fade as another caution flew for Brian Down, who hit the frontstretch wall in turns one and two and came to a stop. Another quick yellow appeared when David McDonald collected Rob Pietz.

On the next restart, Carley challenged Kingsley but got a bad restart, falling back to mid-pack while Miller worked his way to the front, reaching the second spot by the halfway point. The frontrunners battle side-by-side several laps with Miller going around for good on lap 23.

Kingsley tried to use lapped cars to regain the lead from Miller, but to no avail. After a few late cautions, Miller held off any late challenges for the victory.

Notes: Miller’s Atomic Chassis is owned by Shayne Tenace and sponsored by Port City Collision, Upwards Installation Services, Allstar Performance, Bilstein, Wilwood, Winters and Micro-Armor. ... Miller’s first win of the season came April 6 in his first Late Model race at Canandaigua Motorsports Park. ... Luke Carleton, Dean Ferri and Bill Gill failed to make the Humberstone feature lineup. ... The series runs a midweek show next with Wednesday action at Can Am Motorsports Park in LaFargeville, N.Y., another $1,000-to-win event.
